Before You Give Zakat
Zakat begins with a personal responsibility. Before making a payment, take a few minutes to check your intention, your calculation, and where the money can go.
Make your intention clear
Zakat is an act of worship. Intend the payment as Zakat before you give it.
Keep a record of the date and amount. A simple note will help when your next Zakat date arrives.
Check your calculation
Your calculation depends on the wealth you own and the date Zakat becomes due. Cash and savings are often straightforward. Business assets, investments, jewelry, debts, inherited wealth, and missed years may need closer study.
Our Zakat guides provide a starting point. A qualified scholar or Zakat adviser can help with questions specific to your circumstances.
Check who can receive Zakat
The Quran names the categories of Zakat recipients in Surah At-Tawbah 9:60. Poverty and need are among those categories.
A person's circumstances determine eligibility. A familiar label, such as widow or orphan, gives only part of the picture. Financial need still has to be established.
Choose a recipient or organisation you trust to follow these requirements. Ask questions whenever the distribution process is unclear.
Before you pay
Use this short checklist:
I have made the intention to pay Zakat.
I have checked the amount due.
I am satisfied that the payment will reach an eligible recipient.
I have recorded the date and amount.
