Caring for an Orphan's Wealth
The Quran gives a clear duty toward orphans: protect what belongs to them.
Surah An-Nisa 4:2 tells anyone holding an orphan's wealth to return it when the child reaches maturity. It also warns against exchanging valuable property for something inferior or mixing the child's wealth with one's own.
Surah Al-Isra 17:34 says to approach an orphan's wealth only in a way that improves it until the child matures. Both verses treat the property as a trust for which the holder is accountable.
A donor considering a child support arrangement can ask direct questions. How are the funds recorded? Who can spend them? Every decision should serve the child's interests, and there should be a clear process for transferring control when the child is ready.
The wealth belongs to the child. Questions about guardianship, maturity, and property management vary with the circumstances, so the people responsible may need qualified legal and scholarly advice.
