What Zakat Is

A clear explanation of Zakat as worship, purification, growth, and a right owed to eligible recipients.

Zakat is an obligatory act of worship. It is paid from specific types of wealth, at a specific time, to specific people.

The word carries the meanings of purification and growth. It purifies the donor from stinginess, purifies wealth from doubtful excess, and helps protect the heart of the receiver from resentment.

Zakat is not the same as general charity

General sadaqah is voluntary. Zakat is obligatory. Both are rewarded, but one does not automatically replace the other.

A useful comparison is with Salah: extra voluntary prayers do not replace Fajr. In the same way, generous donations do not fulfill Zakat unless they were given as Zakat.

Intention matters

All four schools require intention for Zakat. The intention can be made when setting the money aside or when paying it.

A past donation cannot normally be relabeled as Zakat after the fact if it was given only as general charity.
