Who can receive it
Eligible Zakat Recipients
The eight Quranic categories and why not every good cause is automatically Zakat eligible.
Zakat must reach eligible recipients. This is one of the biggest practical differences between Zakat and general sadaqah.
The Quran names eight categories in Surah At-Tawbah 9:60.
The poor and needy
These are people who do not have enough to meet their basic needs, or who are in hardship even if they do not appear destitute.
Ruhama primarily directs Zakat to widows, orphans, and families who fall under these categories after local verification.
Administrators of Zakat
Those tasked with collecting, verifying, managing, and distributing Zakat are one of the named categories.
This work requires honesty, transparency, and reasonable compensation. Ruhama keeps admin funding separate when donors cover it outside Zakat.
Other named categories
The remaining categories include hearts to be reconciled, those in bondage, those in debt, in the path of Allah, and the stranded traveler.
Some categories have scholarly disagreement in modern application. That is why careful distribution matters.
Who should not receive Zakat
A cause can be noble and still not be Zakat eligible. A building project, general program, or public campaign should not be treated as Zakat unless it fits a recognized category.
An orphan is not automatically eligible just because they are an orphan. If an orphan has enough wealth, they may not be poor or needy.
Family and dependents
You generally cannot use Zakat to replace support you are already obligated to provide.
Family cases can be sensitive. Ask before giving Zakat to parents, children, a spouse, or anyone financially dependent on you.
Practical checklist
- Confirm the recipient fits a named category.
- Do not assume every good cause is Zakat eligible.
- Use trusted distribution partners when you cannot verify directly.
